Russian silver Kokoshnik marks

LATE 20th CENTURY KOKOSHNIK MARKS The Kokoshnik mark (1908-1926 version) was reinstated in 1985 creating some confusion in the dating of Russian silver and opening the way to the possibility of deliberate falsification. More recently the kokoshnik mark was slightly modified assuming a rounder contour than the pre-Revolutionary form As thousands of new diestamps had to be created, there was a transitional changeover period (see first mark) and the kokoshnik mark did not come into full use until the beginning of 1899. Until 1908, the mark consisted of an intaglio engraved left facing woman's head in profile within an oval cartouche, she is wearing the peasant headdress traditionally referred to as a kokoshnik, thus giving the stamp its name Once the new system was adopted in 1899, a uniform mark was used to hallmark Russian silver. The kokoshnik (the traditional woman's headdress) is now the symbol for silver, followed again by the metal standard in zolotniks. Prior to 1908 the symbol faced to the left, however any silver produced after this year will depict the face to the right The Russian standard for silver was based on ' zolotnik '. The name comes from 'zoloto' meaning gold. The unit originated as the weight of a gold coin of the same name which circulated as late as 11th century in Kievan Rus. Originally, a zolotnik represented a 1/96 of a pound, later 1/72 of a pound. In the metric system, one zolotnik equals 4,266 grams, 96 zolotniks equal one Russian pound In 1908 the second kokoshnik mark was introduced, this time with the female head facing to the right, with a small Greek letter signifying the city of assay to the left eg alpha for St Petersburg, and delta for Moscow, and the silver standard to the right. This mark was used until the Revolution in 1917, and somewhat beyond, until the establishment of the full Soviet system
